These programs are designed to meet the specific needs of students and professionals seeking to specialize or enhance their skills in key areas.
Number of Scholarships Available
ARES awards approximately 130 scholarships for Bachelor’s and Master’s programs, as well as 70 scholarships for continuing education programs. Among these scholarships, half (65 for Bachelor’s and Master’s programs and 35 for continuing education) are reserved for candidates from Sub-Saharan Africa.
Eligibility Criteria for ARES Scholarships
To be eligible for an ARES scholarship in Belgium, you must meet the following conditions:
- Nationality: Be a citizen of one of the following countries:
- Africa: South Africa, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Uganda, DR Congo, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Tunisia, Zimbabwe.
- South America and the Caribbean: Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Haiti, Peru.
- Southeast Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal, Philippines, Vietnam.
- Asia: Palestinian Territory.
- Degree: Hold a corresponding degree:
- For Master’s specialization and continuing education, a degree equivalent to a Master’s (2nd cycle) of Belgian university education.
- For Bachelor’s specialization, a degree equivalent to a License or Bachelor’s (1st cycle) of Belgian higher education.
- Recent Degree: Have obtained your most recent relevant academic degree within the last 20 years.
- Residence and Employment: Reside and/or work in your home country at the time of application.
- Age: Be under 40 years old for Bachelor’s and Master’s programs, and under 45 years old for continuing education programs.
- Professional Experience: Have at least two years of relevant professional experience in a developing country after obtaining your 2nd cycle university degree.
- Language Skills: Have a good command of French, both written and spoken.
- Unique Application: Submit only one application for a training program.
Application Procedure for ARES Scholarships
To apply for this scholarship in Belgium, follow these steps:
- Account Creation: Create an account on the GIRAF platform. Once the account is created, it will be validated by ARES within a few hours to a few days. You will receive a confirmation email to set your password and access your personal space. If you already have a validated account from the previous year, you can reuse it, possibly by resetting the password.
- Application Submission: After validation, log in to your account and access the application form through the “Competitive Calls” tab. Start your application by clicking on “International Training Application 2025-2026.”

You can complete your application form in several steps. It will be saved in the “My Tasks” section under the “Competitive Calls” tab on the GIRAF platform until you decide to submit it. Once the “Submit My Application” button is activated, your application will be permanently submitted to ARES and cannot be modified further.
