The U.S Embassy Yaounde is seeking eligible and qualified candidates for the position of: Consular Assistant.

Duties

This position encompasses a combination of responsibilities within the American Citizen Services (ACS), Immigrant Visas (IV), and Non-immigrant Visas (NIV) Units, along with correspondence, financial, and general administrative tasks. The role involves assisting with the full spectrum of consular services across all units of the Consular Section as required:

  • The incumbent will aid applicants seeking passport and citizenship services, gathering essential biographical data.
  • The incumbent will deliver standard services in response to public inquiries, both in person and through electronic and telephone communication, utilizing independent judgment and minimal supervision from the Team Leader or Consular Officer.
  • The incumbent will provide a high caliber of customer service to numerous applicants daily.
  • The incumbent will manage and address inquiries from visa applicants regarding case status and procedural guidance.
  • The incumbent will act as a backup cashier, responsible for the collection, organization, and deposit of all consular fees, including daily cash counts and deposits to the Class-B Cashier.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

  • EXPERIENCE: A minimum of two (02) years of experience in office administration involving interaction with the public.
  • JOB KNOWLEDGE: Fundamental computer skills and familiarity with office procedures. Comprehensive understanding of U.S. laws, regulations, and policies concerning consular visa, citizenship, and special citizen services administration.

Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Evaluations:

  • LANGUAGE: Proficiency in English and French (speaking, reading, writing). This may be assessed.
  • SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    1. Ability to interact with the public under pressure, working meticulously and efficiently to meet deadlines with minimal oversight.
    2. Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
    3. Effective communication skills in person, over the phone, and in writing, conveying accurate information on complex visa and U.S. citizen services with tact and diplomacy.
    4. Ability to maintain accurate case records and organize documents effectively.
    5. Basic mechanical skills to operate specialized office equipment for visa and passport issuance.
    6. Keyboarding and data entry skills, with the aptitude to learn and utilize new database computer programs.

These abilities may be tested.

Benefits and Other Info

Benefits:

  • SALARY: The annual gross salary encompasses the Basic Rate, the Miscellaneous Benefits Allowance, and the End-of-the-Year Bonus. Seniority Allowance is paid in accordance with local labor law. A Cashier allowance is provided for eligible positions.
  • MEDICAL BENEFITS: The U.S. Mission in Yaounde directly reimburses eligible employees for covered medical expenses incurred for themselves and/or eligible dependents, within the limits of the Local Compensation Plan.
  • LEAVE BENEFITS: Subject to the limits and rules of the Local Compensation Plan, employees are entitled to Annual Leave, Sick Leave, Maternity Leave, and Special Leave.
  • HOLIDAYS: The U.S. Mission in Yaounde and the Embassy Branch Office in Douala observe American and Cameroonian public holidays, totaling approximately 19 holidays per year.

For Eligible Family Members (EFMs), benefits can be discussed with the Human Resources Office. The pay plan is assigned during the conditional offer letter process by the HR Office.
