ERA Green Hydrogen Scholarship Program: Call for International Applications

The German Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, is launching an international call for applications for its ERA Green Hydrogen scholarship program. This ambitious initiative aims to gather the world’s top talent in the field of green hydrogen (GH2) to build a network of excellence and develop four specialized working groups.

Applications Open Continuously

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, with no deadline, providing a unique opportunity for postdoctoral researchers passionate about green hydrogen to join this major scientific endeavor.

Who Can Apply?

Postdoctoral researchers with an interest in GH2-related topics and a desire to actively participate in one of the four working groups can apply.

Working Group Areas:

  • Production
  • Transport and Infrastructure
  • Market Stimulation (development of the hydrogen market)
  • Cross-Cutting Issues (regulation, socio-economic and legal framework)

Expanded Eligibility for Postdoctoral Researchers

Postdoctoral researchers affiliated with a university in one of the following countries are invited to apply to the GH2 program:

  • EU Member States
  • Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Australia
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Chile, Côte d’Ivoire
  • Faroe Islands, Georgia, Ghana, Iceland, Japan, Kosovo
  • Mexico, Morocco, Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria
  • North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, Senegal, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland
  • Taiwan, Togo, Turkey, Tunisia, Ukraine, United States, and United Kingdom

Attractive Funding for Research in Germany

The ERA Green Hydrogen program financially supports research projects or continuing education in Germany. Recipients will be able to conduct their work within a public or state-recognized higher education institution, or in a non-university research institute, under the supervision of a German researcher.

The DAAD ERA Green Hydrogen scholarship offers the following benefits:

  • A monthly allowance of 2,800 euros
  • Coverage of health, accident, and liability insurance costs
  • A lump sum allowance for international travel expenses

Additional Support for Scholarship Holders

In addition to the standard benefits, scholarship holders may receive additional support under certain conditions:

  • Disability or chronic illness: coverage of additional costs not covered by other organizations.
  • Eco-responsible travel: encouragement for environmentally friendly travel, with the possibility of partial reimbursement of carbon offsets for flights.
  • Conference participation: financial assistance to attend scientific events.

Funding Duration and Selection Criteria

The scholarship is awarded for a period of 1 to 18 months, non-renewable.

The awarding of the scholarship is based on several criteria:

  • Academic excellence: quality of the academic career and doctorate, publications, and presentations at conferences.
  • Quality of the research project: originality, relevance, feasibility, and alignment with the program’s objectives.
  • Preparation of the proposal: clarity of the research plan, judicious choice of the host institution, and established contacts.
  • Candidate’s potential: expected personal and professional development, ability to integrate into an international network and actively contribute to the working groups.
