Join our Jengi TNS Programme:

We are currently seeking a passionate and driven Junior Conservation Biologist to join our Jengi TNS Programme based in Mambele. Your expertise will be instrumental in achieving the Programme’s ambitious conservation goals.

  • Position: Junior Conservation Biologist
  • Reporting to: Technical Advisor
  • Supervising: Junior Field Assistant
  • Location: Mambele, Boumba et Ngoko Division, South East Cameroon
  • Contract: One-year renewable

Department Mission:

WWF CCO’s mission is to drive sustainable natural resource management in Southeast Cameroon through inclusive stakeholder engagement, ultimately improving local livelihoods. Key focus areas include:

  1. Negotiating comprehensive land-use plans (encompassing protected areas, forest concessions, hunting zones, and agroforestry).
  2. Developing essential infrastructure and management plans for three protected areas (Lobeke, Boumba Bek, and Nki) covering 6,380km2 of critical biodiversity hotspots.
  3. Supporting concessionaires in adopting sustainable practices.
  4. Fostering Community Based Organizations to ensure local participation and benefit from natural resource management.

Key Responsibilities:

The Junior Conservation Biologist is responsible for the day-to-day execution of ecological monitoring activities within Lobeke National Park. Under the guidance of the Jengi-TNS Technical Advisor and Program Manager, this role involves:

  • Implementing agreed ecological monitoring protocols and ensuring data quality.
  • Managing project equipment and resources for field activities.
  • Assisting the Technical Advisor in broader conservation initiatives and park management.
  • Contributing to the overall success of the Jengi TNS Program’s conservation goals in Lobeke National Park.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Support: Provide expert guidance on developing and implementing the Lobeke National Park (LNP) management plan, ensuring alignment with conservation objectives and best practices.
  • Ecological Monitoring: Lead and execute ongoing ecological monitoring activities within LNP and surrounding areas, adhering to rigorous scientific protocols for data collection and management.
  • Community Engagement: Foster local community awareness and participation in conservation efforts through technical support to village surveillance groups (ASMO and COVILAB) in ecological monitoring within Community Hunting Zones and organizing collaborative surveillance initiatives for LNP.
  • Capacity Building: Enhance the data management and analysis capabilities of MINFOF staff and park rangers through targeted training and mentorship.
  • Sustainable Resource Management: Offer technical expertise to logging and hunting concessionaires, promoting sustainable practices in forest and wildlife resource utilization.
  • Project Compliance: Ensure project activities adhere to technical and financial reporting, monitoring, and evaluation requirements, in accordance with WWF standards and donor expectations.
  • Reporting: Prepare clear and concise field reports, keeping the Technical Advisor and WWF team well-informed of program progress and challenges.

Candidate Profile

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Engineer’s degree in Forestry and Wildlife, Zoology, Environmental Science, Rural Geography, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in forest and wildlife resource management or rural community development.
  • Solid understanding of Cameroon’s legal and institutional framework for forest and wildlife resource management.
  • Proven proficiency in GPS, GIS, Cybertracker/SMART, and related tools.
  • Expertise in camera trapping, acoustic monitoring, wildlife observation, and photo analysis.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data collection in phenology and correlating wildlife movement to fruiting patterns.
  • Ability to utilize camera trap data to inform ecotourism strategies.
  • Strong statistical and data analysis skills (Excel, R, etc.) and experience managing databases, including Google Drive.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in French and English.
  • Familiarity with African forest conservation issues and strategies.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to engage with diverse stakeholders, including protected area authorities, local communities, and traditional leaders.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively in a remote setting with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Cultural sensitivity and adaptability to work effectively in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Passion for conservation and commitment to WWF’s mission.

Working Relationships:

  • Internal: Collaborate closely with key program staff, including the Community Development Officer and the Finance, Accounting, and Administrative Assistant.
  • External: Foster strong working relationships and partnerships with MINFOF and MINEP services in Southeast Cameroon, as well as COVAREF, COVILAB, and local NGOs.
