JOB DESCRIPTION (Roles and Responsibilities)
Main purpose of job:

The British High Commission (BHC) is the official representation of the British Government in Cameroon and provides non-resident representation to Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
This attractive internship role supports the BHC’s work on politics, trade, climate and projects on key tasks: political research, events management and communication with key stakeholders in Cameroon and beyond.

This is a varied and interesting position working in the heart of the diplomatic and delivery side of the British High Commission. You will provide administrative and research support to any or all of our priority work strands that include political, conflict, climate, humanitarian, human rights, governance, trade and investment. You may be asked to help on our project delivery with local or international partners. This role will involve contact with most sections of the High Commission.

The job provides an opportunity to learn and contribute to British diplomacy first hand in a fast-paced environment.

We will support you in developing yourself with access to the FCDO’s online courses, as well as shadowing of members of the BHC in their meetings and other engagements. At the end of your time as an intern you will be comfortable with how a major diplomatic entity is run in Cameroon.

The BHC is a welcoming and friendly place. Recent interns have greatly enjoyed, and benefited from, their time with us.

Roles and responsibilities:

  •  Conduct research on particular political issues to assist UK policy development
  •  Support on drafting communications in English and French to support the diplomatic work of the BHC
  •  Occasional translation
  •  Support in organising meetings and large events that further the objectives of the British Government in Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea
  •  Support the political and communications team on a variety of other tasks, ranging from administrative to policy
  •  Customer service: responding to inquiries
  •  Provide ad-hoc support to other sections

Language requirements:

  • Language: English and French
  • Level of language required: Operational proficiency

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  •  Degree in political and Social Sciences, Law, Economics, Journalism and Mass Communication or any other field of study with evidence of interest in politics and international affairs

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  •  Experience in political analysis and reporting. Experience working with media sources
