- Position Title: Social Media Specialist
- Reports To: Head of Insights, Creative, and Digital Strategy
- Location: Preferably one of Greenpeace Africa’s operational offices (South Africa, Cameroon, Senegal, Kenya). However, the role offers flexibility, allowing candidates from across Africa to apply, as Greenpeace Africa operates under a hybrid and remote work model.

Purpose of the Role
Greenpeace Africa is seeking a passionate and results-driven Social Media Specialist to take the lead in designing and implementing an impactful social media strategy. The goal is to expand our audience reach, engage communities in our campaigns, and mobilize public action to amplify our mission and objectives.
This role involves overseeing strategic planning, managing performance metrics (KPIs), creating and curating content, and analyzing platform performance. The Specialist will collaborate with internal teams and external consultants to deliver high-quality campaigns, ensuring alignment with Greenpeace Africa’s overarching goals. A key part of the role includes close coordination with the Digital Marketing Manager to strengthen collaboration between organic and paid social media strategies.
Main Responsibilities and Key Deliverables
Social Media Strategy and Platform Management
- Lead the development and implementation of agile strategies to effectively manage and grow Greenpeace Africa’s presence across social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), Bluesky, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
- Focus on increasing audience engagement to expand our reach and strengthen Greenpeace Africa’s presence in target regions.
- Innovate and execute high-impact campaigns to grow our supporter base, encouraging meaningful action on petitions and other calls to action.
Content Creation and Innovation
- Create, curate, and commission engaging content, including video, to connect audiences with Greenpeace Africa’s mission. Ensure content aligns with current trends, prioritizing creativity and relevance to stay ahead of the curve.
- Collaborate with presenters and videographers to script and produce platform-specific video content that resonates with diverse audiences and drives engagement.
- Explore opportunities for localized and region-specific content to expand outreach and position Greenpeace Africa as a leader in pan-African social media strategies.
- Test and optimize new content formats, ensuring every approach is measurable and results-driven.
Performance Metrics and Trends Analysis
- Set clear objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs) for social media impact, providing direction to consultants and team members.
- Stay updated on industry trends, platform updates, and emerging tools to adapt strategies and keep Greenpeace Africa ahead in social media innovation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate insights and trends into overall strategy, enhancing engagement and mobilization efforts.
Team Leadership and Capacity Building
- Lead by example, fostering a culture of innovation, creativity, and collaboration. Provide coaching, tools, and guidance to digital teams and colleagues to help them execute impactful campaigns.
- Develop proactive community management approaches to maintain a strong connection with supporters across platforms.
- Build and nurture partnerships and collaborations on social media across Africa to amplify Greenpeace Africa’s message and influence.
Analytics and Insights
- Deliver actionable insights through daily, weekly, and monthly performance reports to track progress and refine strategies.
- Collaborate closely with the Digital Marketing Manager to test messaging and content, maximizing the synergy between organic and paid media campaigns for increased supporter sign-ups and donations.
Digital Strategies for Projects
- Actively participate in or lead the design process for campaigns, ensuring each project has a strong digital engagement component.
- Oversee the execution of social media components within campaigns, providing real-time insights to achieve set objectives effectively.
Other Digital Responsibilities
Take the lead in developing and executing comprehensive digital strategies for campaigns when necessary.
Qualifications and Experience
- At least 3 years of professional experience in creating impactful social media content across multiple platforms, implementing agile and effective strategies.
- Proven expertise in crafting and leading high-impact social media strategies that align with organizational goals.
- Strong commitment to Greenpeace Africa’s vision, with a focus on connecting with diverse audiences across Africa. Ability to incorporate African consciousness and a pan-African approach into digital and social media strategies.
- Demonstrated success in creating and delivering engaging content across various formats (e.g., social media posts, blogs, video scripts) that drives campaign engagement and significant reach.
- Experience utilizing innovative technologies, including AI, as part of communication or campaign strategies.
- Proficient in project management—capable of creating clear, structured plans that enable collaboration, effective delegation, and timely delivery of outputs.
- Previous experience collaborating with consultants or creative agencies to produce high-quality social media content, including video production.
Key Skills and Behaviors
Project Management Skills
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Skilled in using image and video editing tools like Photoshop, Canva, Premiere Pro, or similar platforms (e.g., Runway) to create dynamic, engaging social media content.
- Ability to conceptualize, shoot, and edit high-performing videos, including short-form content, using mobile devices or cameras. Being comfortable appearing in or presenting videos is a bonus.
Creativity and Innovation
- Strong passion for creating innovative and compelling content.
- Familiarity and enthusiasm for AI-powered tools and how they can be leveraged in digital strategies.
Communication Skills
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in English and French is preferred, along with knowledge of local or regional African languages.
Data Analysis
- Skilled in interpreting and analyzing social media data to optimize performance and engagement.

Purpose of the Role
The Responsive Campaigner will play a critical role in leading the identification, strategic planning, and execution of dynamic and responsive campaigns for Greenpeace Africa. This role focuses on developing and implementing integrated strategies to effectively engage audiences, strengthen Greenpeace’s counter-power, and support fundraising objectives.
By using a data-driven and evidence-based approach, the Campaigner will design impactful campaigns in collaboration with cross-functional teams. This includes working with program teams, volunteers, engagement specialists, fundraising teams, and communication staff to deliver responsive campaigns that align with Greenpeace’s mission.
A key responsibility of this role is to ensure internal alignment around emerging initiatives by developing a clear system to prioritize pressing issues that require GPAF’s responsiveness.
Main Responsibilities:
- Strategic Planning: Oversee and coordinate all actions related to responsive campaign activities, ensuring alignment with Greenpeace Africa’s goals.
- Representation: Act as a representative of Greenpeace Africa at meetings, with media, stakeholders, and local communities, as needed.
- Collaboration with Communications: Partner with the Communications team to engage target audiences, ensuring media outreach aligns with campaign objectives.
- Reporting & Updates: Prepare or delegate the preparation of comprehensive briefings and updates to keep staff, media, and stakeholders informed on campaign issues, progress, and outcomes.
- Fundraising: Collaborate with the Fundraising team to identify and develop strategies for maximizing the campaign’s fundraising potential.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Lead project monitoring and evaluation efforts, providing detailed reports to the Head of Project Development, Senior Portfolio Managers, and campaigners in other offices.
- Research Support: Work closely with the Research team to collect critical data and insights that will inform campaign responses.
- Security Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to Greenpeace Africa’s security guidelines and promptly report any security incidents following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Networking & Responsiveness:
- Pan-African Perspective: Drive the adoption of a Pan-African approach in project delivery, ensuring responsive opportunities are leveraged to advance campaign and project goals across the continent.
- Agility & Impact: Enhance the responsiveness and agility of the project team, ensuring swift actions that support campaign success.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Cultivate strong relationships with key external stakeholders, including civil society, communities, and authorities, to push forward campaign goals.
- Global Networking: Build and maintain strong connections with Greenpeace International (GPI) and other global networks to amplify the impact of the campaign.

Qualifications and Experience:
- Educational Requirements: Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Policy, Development, Biodiversity, or a related field.
- Professional Experience: Minimum of 5 years’ experience in advocacy, public awareness, campaign management, or related areas.
- Multicultural Team Experience: Proven experience in working within multicultural teams.
- Pan-African Mindset: A deep understanding and commitment to Pan-African values and objectives.
- Project Management Knowledge: Familiarity with project proposal development and the full project management cycle.
- Negotiation and Consensus Building: Strong skills in negotiation, stakeholder engagement, and facilitating dialogue to achieve mutual goals.
- Campaigning Expertise: Experience in advocacy, content creation for campaigns, strategy execution, lobbying, and canvassing.
