Primary Responsibilities

The Defence Section Driver will be an essential member of the Defence Team, ensuring efficient transportation services while maintaining a customer-focused approach.

This role requires flexibility, as drivers may need to respond to urgent requests or work under high-pressure situations. The driver will frequently interact with VIP visitors, senior government officials, and dignitaries, representing the professional image of the British High Commission.

Additionally, the role involves occasional road travel to Gabon and Equatorial Guinea and supporting administrative duties for smooth transport operations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Transport Services (50%)

  • Provide safe, professional transportation for staff and visitors across Yaoundé, Cameroon, and occasionally to Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
  • Assist passengers and adjust plans if unexpected changes arise.
  • Conduct airport pickups/drop-offs, coordinating with airport officials as needed.
  • Work outside regular hours when required (compensated accordingly).
  • Ensure strict adherence to traffic laws and security regulations.
  • Accurately record journey details for all official trips.
  • Prioritize passenger safety and comfort at all times.

2. Vehicle Maintenance & Management (30%)

  • Maintain accurate mileage and fuel consumption records.
  • Conduct daily inspections to ensure vehicles are in optimal condition.
  • Arrange for regular servicing, repairs, and pre-trip inspections.
  • Keep vehicles clean and secured at all times.
  • Ensure vehicles are fully prepared for VIP visits and high-profile trips.
  • Secure all vehicle equipment and tools properly.

3. Administrative Support (20%)

  • Support the day-to-day operations of the Defence Section.
  • Maintain transport-related data and records.
  • Understand and comply with MOD/BHC Transport Policy.
  • Attend weekly meetings and report to the Administrative Defence Assistant (ADA).
  • Handle official document deliveries to government and partner organizations.
  • Assist with non-transport-related duties as needed.
  • Occasionally substitute for other BHC drivers during peak times.
  • Manage personal leave records, expense claims, and reconciliation of corporate credit cards.

Required Qualifications & Skills

Essential

  • Category B Driver’s License
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a driver/chauffeur
  • Strong knowledge of Yaoundé roads and surrounding areas
  • Basic mechanical knowledge (vehicle troubleshooting & minor repairs)
  • Good communication skills
  • Basic IT skills (email, data entry, records management)
  • Fluency in English and French (operational level)

Desirable

  • Experience driving across Cameroon
  • Previous work experience with an embassy, international organization, NGO, or expatriates
  • Certification in Civilian Armoured Vehicle driving
  • First aid training
