Organisation Overview Established in 2011, the International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) is a global non-governmental organization dedicated to supporting humanitarian aid workers by creating safety coordination platforms in high-risk environments. INSO offers a variety of complimentary services to registered NGOs, including real-time incident monitoring, analytical reporting, safety data and mapping, crisis management assistance, as well as staff orientations and training sessions.

Operating in 20 of the world’s most volatile countries, INSO is headquartered in The Hague, known as the international city of peace and justice.

INSO Cameroon initially integrated into the Lake Chad Basin program in 2017 and became an independent platform at the close of 2021. Currently, the program maintains regional offices in Maroua, Buea, and a satellite office in Bamenda, with the main country office located in Yaoundé. The Northwest, Southwest, and Far North regions are experiencing severe humanitarian challenges due to armed conflict, communal violence, climate-related risks, and inadequate socioeconomic infrastructure. By joining INSO Cameroon, you will contribute to the safety of over 120 local and international NGOs, enabling them to deliver crucial humanitarian aid effectively and securely.

As a Safety Advisor, you will play a crucial role in a collaborative team, providing critical analysis and guidance to enhance humanitarian access. This role is essential to the NGO community’s efforts in delivering aid to thousands in need. Your responsibilities will include analyzing local dynamics to inform strategic decisions and programming for NGOs. You must be outgoing, resilient, capable of analyzing complex issues, offering practical safety and security advice, and dedicated to humanitarian principles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Information Network Management: Establish and maintain an active network to gather credible and relevant safety information.
  • Safety Information Provision: Deliver timely, credible safety information and contextual analysis of the local operating environment to NGOs.
  • Analytical Product Development: Create analytical reports on regional and country-wide dynamics pertinent to NGOs.
  • Team Management: Oversee small office teams, supervise national staff, and manage local logistics and administration.
  • NGO Engagement: Facilitate and lead regional NGO roundtables.
  • Stakeholder Interaction: Collaborate with relevant actors, including the UN and the NGO community, to enhance humanitarian access in the Northwest and Southwest regions.
  • Coordination Participation: Engage in regional coordination and advocacy groups focused on humanitarian access.
  • Safety Management Support: Assist NGOs in developing their safety management capacities by reviewing policy documents, conducting site surveys, and aiding in crisis planning.
  • Representation: Effectively represent, promote, and uphold INSO’s principles of independence, impartiality, and neutrality.

Qualifications

  • Essential:

    1. Exceptional English communication skills, both written and verbal
    2. Proven ability to produce high-quality written materials under tight deadlines, with meticulous attention to detail
    3. Demonstrated resilience and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, demanding environment
    4. Substantial experience in humanitarian operations, risk management, and/or humanitarian access negotiation
    5. Strong understanding of humanitarian safety practices and principles
    6. Deep commitment to humanitarian principles and values
    7. Advanced degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience
  • Desired:

    1. Experience in an inter-agency coordination role
    2. Proven ability to operate effectively in insecure or conflict-affected environments
    3. Experience in West and/or Central Africa or a similar context
    4. Local language proficiency
    5. Experience with NGO security management and/or project management
    6. Established local information networks
    7. Proven ability to lead and motivate teams while adhering to strict protocols and deadlines

Terms & Conditions

  • 12-month renewable contract
  • Monthly salary of €5000
  • 4 days of annual leave per month
  • 7 days of R&R every 2 months with a €1250 allowance per cycle
  • Comprehensive global medical coverage (excluding USA)
  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance
