Job Summary
The Biomonitoring Assistant will contribute to the implementation of biomonitoring programs in the southern sector of the Dja Faunal Reserve (DFR). This role involves monitoring wildlife in the southern sector of DFR and peripheral zones of the Southern part of DFR. The ideal candidate will have experience in fieldwork, data management, and a strong passion for environmental conservation.
The Biomonitoring Assistant will report to the Biomonitoring Officer based in Djoum. However, depending on priorities and specific operational requirements, AWF may assign the incumbent to other locations where it operates in Cameroon.
Responsibilities
- Assist in implementing and coordinating biomonitoring programs in the field within the southern sector of DFR.
- Conduct fieldwork to collect ecological data and relevant information on wildlife while adhering to established protocols.
- Process and analyze wildlife data using software programs such as Cyber tracker, SMART, Camera traps, and ArcGIS.
- Support ranger training programs scheduled in the southern sector of DFR.
- Assist in deploying anti-poaching strategies and field interventions to combat poaching, including team preparation, planning, debriefing, data downloading and treatment, and reporting.
- Maintain accurate records of data and samples collected in the field.
- Assist in preparing reports, presentations, and other documents related to biomonitoring programs in the southern sector of DFR.
- Support project management tasks, including scheduling, budget tracking, and communication with stakeholders in the southern sector of DFR.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations during fieldwork and other activities conducted in the southern sector of DFR.
- Stay updated with scientific literature and research trends in biomonitoring and environmental science.
- Provide any other support to the Djoum Biomonitoring Officer as needed.
Requirements and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Botany, Zoology, Wildlife Management, or a related field of study.
- At least 2 years of experience in fieldwork and data collection, including proficiency in data collection tools, Compass, Android devices, and GPS.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other software programs such as Cyber tracker, SMART, Camera trapping, and QGIS for data management and analysis.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both French and English.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to travel and work in remote locations.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance.
