DATA SCIENCE WITHOUT BORDERS PROJECT.
Funded by the Wellcome Trust Foundation, this three-year pathfinder initiative aims to amplify the application of data science across Africa. Despite the vast amounts of health data generated by various African countries, there remains a significant opportunity to leverage advancements in data analysis techniques, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, to transcend national borders. The project’s primary objectives are to bolster national teams’ machine learning capabilities and to advance data analytics expertise through the use of sophisticated AI tools. Coordinated from Nairobi, Kenya, the project will be implemented in Senegal, Ethiopia, and Cameroon, with the Cameroonian component based at the Douala General Hospital (DGH).
ROLE OVERVIEW
To support the project in Cameroon, the DSWB-DGH team seeks to recruit a Data Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the quality, integrity, and efficiency of data management processes. This role will involve facilitating effective data analysis and decision-making, thereby significantly contributing to the project’s overall success.
Data Manager Duties and Responsibilities:
- Data Management Strategy: Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive data management plan, ensuring data quality and integrity throughout the research process.
- Data Collection & Quality Assurance: Design and implement robust data collection protocols, minimizing errors and ensuring consistency. Apply advanced data cleaning and validation techniques using relevant software and scripting languages.
- Data Documentation & Standardization: Create and maintain detailed data dictionaries and codebooks, establishing clear data definitions and standards.
- Data Quality Control & Monitoring: Implement rigorous data quality control measures, including validation rules and integrity checks. Monitor data quality metrics and proactively address any concerns.
- Data Collaboration & Security: Collaborate effectively with researchers and IT teams to ensure secure data storage, access, and sharing, adhering to data governance policies.
- Data Analysis & Reporting: Conduct comprehensive statistical analyses using Python or R, generating insightful data presentations and reports.
- Data Issue Resolution: Proactively liaise with project coordinators to address data errors, discrepancies, or missing information, maintaining ongoing data cleaning efforts.
- Data Integrity & Security: Ensure the integrity, security, and regular backup of the study database.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Education: Master’s degree in Computer Science, Biostatistics, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field with proven experience in scientific research data management.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Data Manager or Data Analyst in a project setting.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Python or R for data analysis
- Understanding of machine learning concepts and techniques
- Expertise in database management systems (SQL, MySQL, Oracle)
- Knowledge of data preprocessing and integration techniques
- Familiarity with electronic health records and data collection tools
- Experience with data visualization and reporting tools (Tableau, Power BI)
- Soft Skills:
- Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving abilities
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
- Strong understanding of data governance policies and procedures
Project Languages
The official working languages for this project are English and French. Proficiency in spoken and written English will be a significant asset.
