Unlocking Africa’s Potential: Western and Central Africa (AFW) Region
Africa is a continent of opportunity, home to a dynamic, young population and a market of nearly 1.2 billion people. At the World Bank, we are dedicated to harnessing Africa’s potential by fostering innovation and investment in Sub-Saharan countries. Our goal is to transform the Africa regional teams into hubs of cutting-edge solutions.
Despite Africa’s growing potential, persistent challenges such as gaps in education, health, and skills development have left the continent realizing only 40% of its projected potential. The rise in conflict, food insecurity, population growth, and the disruptive effects of climate change pose additional hurdles. In response, the World Bank is taking decisive action to counter these challenges, with a focus on building resilience and promoting sustainable development.
In West and Central Africa, the World Bank leads with a portfolio of over 350 projects, valued at more than $38 billion, across key sectors such as agriculture, energy, trade, transport, education, health, and water and sanitation. These initiatives aim to drive job creation, gender equality, poverty reduction, and improve the quality of life. With the global fight against extreme poverty focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa, where 87% of the world’s extreme poor are projected to reside by 2030, this region is pivotal to achieving our mission.
