Job Overview
Peace Corps Cameroon is hiring three Back-up Drivers to support operations during peak activity periods at the Yaoundé office. These temporary roles require organized, proactive candidates who can manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision, work effectively as part of a team, and consistently deliver high-quality customer service. Note: This position does not include benefits such as severance, retirement, medical, or paid leave.
Key Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Motor Pool Coordinator, the Back-up Driver will handle various transportation and vehicle maintenance duties. Responsibilities include:
- Driving Peace Corps vehicles for staff, volunteers, and official activities as directed by the Director of Management and Operations (DMO), General Service Manager (GSM), or Motor Pool Coordinator (MPC).
- Occasionally undertaking long-distance trips as required.
- Receiving daily assignments from the Motor Pool Coordinator or GSM.
- Maintaining a clean, presentable vehicle at all times.
- Documenting vehicle operation logs and ensuring records are accurate.
- Reporting any suspicious individuals or incidents to the Motor Pool Coordinator, GSM, or DMO.
- Performing daily vehicle checks, reporting any issues promptly.
- Complying with the work schedule, Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturday work during PST (Pre-Service Training).
Safety and Security Compliance
Back-up Drivers must strictly adhere to Peace Corps safety and security protocols and report any security concerns to the Safety and Security Manager (SSM) and Country Director (CD). They are responsible for operating Peace Corps vehicles safely, reporting suspicious incidents immediately, and avoiding distractions while driving.
Prohibited Behaviors While Driving
Back-up Drivers are required to prioritize safety at all times. They must not engage in texting or any other distracted driving behaviors while operating a government-owned vehicle (GOV) or a privately-owned vehicle (POV) for official business, except in emergencies.
Required Qualifications
Education:
- Completion of elementary school.
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of professional driving experience with a strong driving record.
- Hold a Category B and D driving license.
- Demonstrated knowledge of local traffic laws and national routes.
- Proficiency in vehicle maintenance and safe driving practices.
Language Skills:
- Fluency in either English or French (written and spoken) with a working knowledge of the other.
Essential Skills and Abilities:
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and professional presentation.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Basic computer literacy (MS Word, Excel).
- Capacity to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including occasional weekends and rural travel as needed.
