Mitacs Globalink Research Internship 2022 in Canada

Mitacs Globalink Research Internship 2022 is an initiative of Canada to empower and educate international students by teaching them Canadian Research Methods and techniques. The Globalink Research internship in Canada for international students offers a 12-week research program to the interns under the supervision of Canadian Universities professors or facility members in numerous disciplines. The interns can continue their summer internships in science, engineering, maths, humanities, and social sciences. The fully-funded international internship also has many interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects which means that the students can search for the project in specific as well as in general categories.

The fully-funded Mitacs internship is available in almost 70 universities all over Canada. There are many academic partners from around the world who also part in the research projects. The top internship in Canada provides the ideas and techniques of the academic partners too while completing their internship projects in a Candaidain university. The academic partners include Universities Australia, Brazil’s Araucaria Foundation, The China Scholarship Council, Columbia’s Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Fulbright Canada, and Universities UK International, etc. These international partners support the Globalink internship program.

The fully-funded summer internship in Canada provides the students of different universities a platform to work together on a project. The students have life-changing opportunities from this international paid internship because they come in contact with others from different countries and institutes. Through this Collaborative internship, they become able to build a global network of Mitacs Globalink alumni network and cooperate for a better future. For example, a Harvard student has worked with Queen’s university lab to design an instrument for rapid screening of pathogens that cause Lyme disease. Similarly, researchers from the University of Alberta and Yukon University are working with mining companies in order to bring vegetation back to Yukon mines.

The Global Research Internship for international students is a highly competitive initiative to attract talented researchers from Mitacs partners of Canada. The main objective and purpose of the internship are to build a bridge between Canada and emerging global research talent. Mitacs also provides opportunities to the internees to attended industry events, government events, and professional development courses while their stay in Canada. About Scientific Exchanges Program:
The African Union Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Policy Framework aims to facilitate harmonization of AU Member States’ SPS policy priorities of SPS systems in Africa. The policy framework addresses diverse and intersecting needs with the objective to; establish harmonized science-based SPS systems; strengthen collaboration and trade facilitation; build technical capacity and; increase political support and public and private sector investment in SPS systems.

The Scientific Exchanges Program (SEP) supports USDA’s agricultural research goals of promoting collaborative programs among agricultural professionals of eligible countries, agricultural professionals of the United States, the international agricultural research system, and U.S. entities conducting research. SEP is implemented by USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service, Global Programs, Fellowship Programs.

The SEP Fellowships in general was created to operationalize the joint effort of the AU and USDA to promote food security and economic growth in eligible countries by educating a new generation of agricultural scientists, increasing scientific knowledge and collaborative research to improve agricultural productivity, and extending that knowledge to users and intermediaries in the marketplace. The collaborative nature of the SEP training and research programs benefits the fellow, his or her home institution, and partner country; the U.S. host institution, its professors, researchers, and students; and the global agricultural sector by improving agricultural productivity, systems, and processes in partnering nations through the transfer of new science and agricultural technologies.

This application package focus on applicants interested in establishing and harmonizing SPS regulatory regimes across the eight Regional Economic Communities (RECs) of the African Union (AU). The goal will be to empower fellows to advocate for sound SPS policy to peers, decision-makers, and the public.

Objectives of the Fellowship Focus on AU SPS Regulatory Regimes:

  • Support AU-RECs to establish SPS regulatory regimes in the African Continental Free Trade Area based on science and the international standard setting bodies (Codex, International Plant Protection Convention, and World Organization for Animal Health) that allows for the safe cross border trade of agricultural products.
  • Create synergies among agricultural policy practitioners in the AU-RECs, and all relevant stakeholders including but not limited to U.S. regulatory agencies and the Office of the United States Trade Representative, to work together in formulating a road map for the implementation of the SPS policy framework.
  • Provide leadership and science communication to empower fellows to advocate for sound policy to peers, decision-makers, and the general public.
  • Contribute to the strategic goals and objectives of individual fellows, the host institutions, and USDA, providing opportunity for application of research agendas in a “real-world” environment which can have a direct impact on international trade, food security, and economic growth in emerging economies.
  • Collaborate with and gain input from relevant stakeholders, such as U.S. regulatory agencies and the Office of the United States Trade Representative.
  • Develop knowledge of SPS regulations and gaps which currently exist in the AU-RECs with special attention to policy frameworks, implementation capacity, actors and synergy of regimes.

  • Establishing and harmonizing SPS regulatory regimes across the eight RECs of the AU. Given the depth of potential SPS measures and complexity of topics the list below may not be exhaustive of all topics. The research areas are aligned within the three overarching areas of SPS including: food safety (WHO Codex), animal health (OIE), and plant health (IPPC) as well as a general category for a researcher who may analyze impacts of SPS implementation on producers, consumers, health outcomes, and/or other areas important to policy-makers. Many of these themes of research cross-over between categories.

Candidates for the Scientific Exchanges Program will be evaluated, interviewed, and selected based on the following criteria:

  • Citizen of a country in the AU.
  • Good reading, writing, and speaking skills in English language.
  • Master’s degree or higher with at least two years of practical experience (minimum).
  • Currently employed by a university, research institution, or other scientific institution in a country in the AU.
  • Intention to continue working in a country of the AU for a minimum of two years following the return from the United States.
  • Researcher with a clear connection to SPS regulatory regimes, who can adapt lessons learned from the U.S. SPS regulatory model at both national and state levels.
  • Proposal directly related to the research topic.

The YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship will bring up to 700 young leaders to the United States in the summer of 2022 for a comprehensive executive-style program that is designed to build skills and empower Fellows to lead in their respective sectors and communities.

About the Award: The Mandela Washington Fellowships for Young African Leaders empowers young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking. The Fellowship will provide up to 700 outstanding young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to hone their skills at a U.S. college or university with support for professional development after they return home.

The Fellows, who are between the ages of 25 and 35, have established records of accomplishment in promoting innovation and positive change in their organizations, institutions, communities, and countries. The YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship

Type: Fellowship

Eligibility: Applicants will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, gender, religion, socio-economic status, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. The Mandela Washington Fellowship is open to young African leaders who meet the following criteria:

  • Are between the ages of 25 and 35 on or before the application deadline, although exceptional applicants ages 21-24 will be considered;
  • Are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States;
  • Are eligible to receive a United States J-1 visa;

Selection Process and Criteria: The Mandela Washington Fellowship selection process is a merit-based open competition. After the deadline, all eligible applications will be reviewed by a selection panel. Following this review, chosen semifinalists will be interviewed by the U.S. embassies or consulates in their home countries. If advanced to the semi-finalist round, applicants must provide a copy of their international passport (if available) or other government-issued photo identification at the time of the interview. Selection panels will use the following criteria to evaluate applications (not in order of importance):

Value of Fellowship: There is no fee to apply to the Mandela Washington Fellowship. If you are selected for the Fellowship, the U.S. government will cover all participant costs. Financial provisions provided by the U.S. Government will include:

  • J-1 visa support;
  • Round-trip travel from Fellow’s home city to the U.S. and domestic U.S. travel as required by the program;
  • A six-week academic and leadership institute;
  • Concluding Summit in Washington, DC;
  • Accident and sickness benefit plan;
  • Housing and meals during the program; and
  • An optional six-week Professional Development Experience (for up to 100 Fellows).

Please note: the Fellowship will not cover salary while Fellows are away from work or funds for personal purchases such as gifts.

Mandela Washington Fellows will also have access to ongoing professional development opportunities, mentoring, networking and training, and support for their ideas, businesses, and organizations.

The Position: The Cashier will be based in Yaoundé, Cameroon, and reports to the Station Accountant in Cameroon. The Cashier is to assist in various activities in the Accounting Unit.

Key responsibilities:

  • Payment of All Station invoices (Cash and Mobile Money) and Receipt of all Station cash transactions;
  • Check and Register all incoming invoices in the Accounts Payable platform;
  • Ensure accurate cash management and timely cash reports (Daily) while disbursing funds as per IITA’s Financial procedures;
  • Ensure accurate management of MTN and Orange Money accounts and timely reports (Daily) on MTN and Orange accounts per IITA’s Financial procedures;
  • Follow up on utility invoices at the Station;

Requirements

  • Holder of at least a Bac+2 (GCE A-Level+2) diploma in accounting, management or finance (BTS, DUT, DEUG);
  • Have at least 2 (two) years of professional experience, with at least 1 (one) year, as Cashier or Accountant;

Helen Keller International is an international non‐governmental organization whose mission is to save the sight and lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged by combating the causes and consequences of blindness and malnutrition. We do this by establishing programs based on evidence and research in vision, health, and nutrition. Established in 1915, HKI maintains its Headquarters in New York City, with Regional Offices in Senegal and Phnom Penh to support 22 country offices in Africa and Asia.

Since the 1990s, HKI‐Cameroon has been working to establish sustainable evidence‐based approaches to enhance health and nutrition, improve education for the disabled, and expand access to eye health services for Cameroonians, particularly women and school-aged children. Helen Keller International-Cameroon’s programs are integrated at all levels of the government health and education structures by helping to develop its human resources and infrastructure, conduct needs assessments, analyze local context to inform program design and implementation, train personnel, provide basic equipment and medicines, deliver services if needed, and monitor program progress and evaluate program impact.
We are currently seeking a Project Officer with relevant experience in project management, a sound understanding of eye care, Cameroon education system and Health system. The incumbent will coordinate and work closely with the lead ophthalmologist and other key stakeholders to ensure quality implementation of the Bright Sight project in Cameroon

Title of position: Project Officer

Duty station: Yaounde

Reports to: Program Advisor

Type of contract: Fixed-term contract

Duration: One year renewable

Dimension of role

The Project Officer will ensure implementation of activities related to a comprehensive project to prevent blindness, identify children with visual impairments and link them to health and education services, and build capacity of the system to address the needs of these children.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to all key stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the Child Blindness program in Yaoundé and the achievement of the program’s objectives.
  • In liaison with the lead Ophthalmologist, ensure effective planning, implementation, evaluation and reporting of the program.
  • In liaison with the lead Ophthalmologist, develop the annual and monthly work plans for all activities.
  • Liaise with government counterparts, non-governmental partners, and other stakeholders involved in Helen Keller Intl Cameroon’s eye health program.
  • Engage the government stakeholders, partners at the AEH, National Program for the Prevention of Blindness (PNLCé) to build modules, training curricula for the various training activities planned in the program;
  • Represent Helen Keller Intl-Cameroon in stakeholder’s meetings,
  • Advocate to the government and other stakeholders on the processes and the activities at the national, central and district level with support from the team.
  • Working closely with the Administrative and Finance sections of Helen Keller Intl-Cameroon Country office, to assist in the procurement of equipment/services, development of budgets for eye health projects, and monitor project expenditures to support technical activities.
  • Submit progress and financial reports as required by donors and other stakeholders. Other reports/documents may be required as per the request of the senior program manager: Eye Health.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and the country management

Qualifications:

  • Degree in a relevant field including eye care (Eye CareTechnician,Specialized nurse in eye care, medical doctor), public health, social sciences, business management;
  • Experience working with non-government/nonprofit organizations is an asset;
  • Have at least two (02) years of proven professional experience in public health in relation to eye care;
  • Capacity to be self-reliant, results oriented, and manage multiple deadlines;
  • Experience working with the government at various levels;
  • Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a team player who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical initiatives;
  • Ensure appropriate confidentiality for internal documents;
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills in French and in English;
  • Demonstrated ability to convey messages through clear and concise writing; and
  • Ability to travel domestically on short notice.
