About the UMGF Fellowship
The University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) is a merit-based award granted on the basis of academic excellence. It is reserved for full-time graduate students (Master’s and Doctoral) to recognize outstanding academic achievement.

- Master’s: up to $40,000

UMGF Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be enrolled full-time in a Master’s or Doctoral program at the University of Manitoba.
- Hold a minimum admission GPA of 3.0 — some departments may require a higher GPA.
- Demonstrate academic excellence and strong research potential.
- Maintain full-time enrollment while making satisfactory progress in their program.
- Not receive, during the fellowship period, another award of equal or greater value.
UMGF Selection Process
The selection procedure is coordinated by the departments:
- Applications must be submitted directly to the relevant academic department.
- Each department reviews and recommends eligible students to the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS).
- The FGS then conducts the final approval and formally notifies successful candidates by email.
Eligible Countries
This fellowship is open to students worldwide, both Canadian and international.
Funding and Benefits
- Master’s students: $20,000 per year, for 12 to 24 months (up to $40,000 total).
- Doctoral (PhD) students: $25,000 per year, for up to 48 months (maximum of $100,000).
Renewal of the award is possible, depending on program progress and academic performance.
Duration of the Fellowship
- Master’s: up to 24 months
- Doctoral (PhD): up to 48 months
Maximum cumulative duration per student: 4 years
