Corporate Services Department Overview

The Corporate Services Department within Global Corporate Solutions (GCS) plays a critical role in supporting the World Bank Group by delivering a range of essential services. These include Translation and Interpretation, Graphic Design and Publications, Printing, Interactive Media, Travel and Visa Services, Food and Conference Services, Mail and Shipping, Staff Services, and the Art Program. The department also provides administrative oversight and support to the World Bank Family Network, the World Bank Group Staff Association, and the 1818 Society. It is responsible for establishing the policy framework, setting service standards, and ensuring seamless delivery through a combination of internal staff and external vendors across both Headquarters and Country Offices.

With a team of approximately 130 staff and 1,000 contractors, the department ensures high-quality services for the institution globally.

Translation and Interpretation Unit (GCSTI) Overview

The Translation and Interpretation Unit (GCSTI) is dedicated to facilitating effective communication between the World Bank Group and its diverse stakeholders, including member governments, civil society, nongovernmental organizations, and other key entities. By providing high-quality translation and conference interpretation services, GCSTI supports the organization’s global mission.

As part of one of the six in-house translation programs (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish), the successful candidate will contribute specifically to the French translation program. Reporting to the Team Leader under the general oversight of the GCSTI Senior Program Manager, the candidate will play a key role in producing and ensuring the accuracy of translated materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce Self-Revised Translations: Translate a wide range of World Bank documents from English to French, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and consistency, while adhering to deadlines.
  • Handle Sensitive Translations: Manage translations of sensitive or confidential documents, often with tight turnaround times.
  • Conduct Thorough Research: Utilize translation tools and systems to ensure the use of specialized and accurate terminology.
  • Revise Peer Translations: Review and improve translations completed by other team members.
  • Ensure Quality Control: Verify the content and format of translated documents, particularly those processed through computer-assisted tools.
  • Support Terminology Development: Contribute to ongoing efforts in building and refining specialized terminology.
  • Collaborate with Colleagues: Ensure consistency in style and terminology by coordinating with other translators working on similar projects.
  • Client Communication: Liaise with clients regarding the delivery and content of translated documents.
  • Self-Management and Reporting: Organize personal workload efficiently and report progress to supervisors.
  • Stay Technologically Updated: Maintain current IT skills and stay informed of new developments in the translation and interpretation field.

Selection Criteria

  • Minimum Requirements: Master’s degree with at least five years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Degree in Translation or a post-graduate degree in Economics, Finance, Law, or Social Sciences.
  • Language Proficiency: Native-level proficiency in French and excellent comprehension of English. Knowledge of Portuguese or Spanish is an advantage.
  • Software Skills: Proficient in standard software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, along with web-based terminology and reference tools.
  • CAT Tools Expertise: Experience with CAT Tools like SDL Trados and the ability to manage translation memories.
  • Work Under Pressure: Ability to deliver quality translations under tight deadlines.
  • Multicultural Teamwork: Proven ability to work in a multicultural environment and build strong working relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Specialized Knowledge: Expertise in fields such as public finance, law, or the social sciences is a plus.
  • Interpreter Qualification: A certification as an interpreter is considered an asset.
