Peace Corps Cameroon is Hiring a Peace Corps Medical Officer (PCMO)

Position Overview

The United States Peace Corps is inviting applications for the position of Peace Corps Medical Officer (PCMO) based in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The organization is seeking either a qualified Medical Doctor or Nurse Practitioner to provide comprehensive healthcare services to U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers serving in Cameroon.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Peace Corps Country Director in Cameroon and in close collaboration with the Office of Health Services at Peace Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Salary

Successful candidates will receive a competitive annual salary based on qualifications and experience.

  • Medical Doctor: 23,964,649 FCFA – 41,938,129 FCFA
  • Nurse Practitioner: 18,864,601 FCFA – 33,013,051 FCFA

Compensation will be negotiated within the advertised salary range according to documented professional experience and previous earnings.

Key Responsibilities

The Peace Corps Medical Officer will be responsible for delivering high-quality healthcare services and medical support to Peace Corps Volunteers and Trainees. Main responsibilities include:

  • Deliver routine primary healthcare services and manage common illnesses and injuries following Peace Corps clinical guidelines.
  • Provide preventive health education and promote healthy lifestyles.
  • Offer short-term counseling on stress management, cultural adaptation, disease prevention, and emotional well-being.
  • Respond promptly to medical emergencies.
  • Participate as a member of the Peace Corps senior management team in Cameroon.
  • Organize and facilitate health-related training sessions.
  • Conduct field visits to Volunteers stationed across Cameroon.
  • Oversee medical office administration, including budgeting and reporting.
  • Manage inventories of medical equipment and pharmaceutical supplies.
  • Mentor and provide technical support to other Peace Corps Medical Officers.
  • Coordinate sexual assault prevention and response activities.
  • Participate in a rotating 24-hour on-call schedule.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Contract Information

The initial contract is expected to be awarded for one year, with the possibility of three to four annual extensions, subject to:

  • satisfactory performance,
  • continued operational needs,
  • availability of funding.

The position requires a full-time schedule of at least 40 hours per week, including after-hours, weekend, holiday, and on-call responsibilities when required.

Benefits will be provided in accordance with Peace Corps policies. Eligibility and benefit packages may vary depending on the applicant’s citizenship or residency status.

Please note that relocation and housing expenses are not expected to be covered for applicants recruited through this local announcement.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet all of the following minimum requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited medical school (Medical Doctors must graduate from an institution recognized by the World Directory of Medical Schools).
  • Hold a valid professional license, registration, or certification to practice as a Medical Doctor or Nurse Practitioner in Cameroon, the United States, or the country of professional training.
  • Minimum of two years of recent independent clinical experience in primary healthcare following internship and/or residency.
  • At least two years of experience delivering health education programs.
  • Experience providing emotional support and short-term counseling.
  • Experience designing and delivering health-related training.
  • Willingness to travel extensively within Cameroon and internationally when required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to obtain a United States visa.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • All application documents must be submitted in English or accompanied by an English translation.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • Experience managing or administering a healthcare facility.
  • Previous experience working with international organizations.

  • Copy of a valid medical license.
  • Professional certification (for Nurse Practitioners).

  • Completed and signed Privileging Form.
  • Medical school diploma.
  • Degree Verification Form.
  • Three professional reference letters or completed reference forms.

The CV should clearly include:

  • Complete job descriptions and responsibilities.
  • Employment start and end dates.
  • Salary history.
  • Number of staff supervised.
  • Full-time or part-time status.
  • Reason for leaving each position.
  • Supervisor names and contact numbers.
  • Volunteer experience.
  • Languages spoken.

Reference letters must:

  • Be issued within the last two years.
  • Include one immediate supervisor.
  • Include at least two medical professionals who directly supervised the applicant’s clinical work.
  • Address both clinical competence and professional performance.

All documents must be submitted in Microsoft Word or readable PDF format.

Recruitment Process
