This doctoral scholarship is aimed at exceptional students who are either accepted into or enrolled in the first or second year of a doctoral program in a field related to the humanities and social sciences. It aims to support research on topics such as human rights, responsible citizenship, Canada’s relationship with the world, or the environment. Candidates must demonstrate academic excellence, engaged leadership, and a collaborative spirit open to diversity.
Pierre Elliott Trudeau (1919-2000), the 15th Prime Minister of Canada, made a lasting impact on the country’s history through numerous major reforms. He notably introduced the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982, guaranteeing fundamental rights to Canadians. Trudeau also worked towards a bilingual and multicultural Canada, thereby strengthening national unity in the face of Quebec’s independence movements.

Scholarship Amount
The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships offer the following benefits:
- An annual stipend of up to $50,000 per year for three years.
- An additional allowance of up to $20,000 per year for three years to support research activities, networking, and travel necessary for doctoral research.
- Participation in activities and events organized by the Foundation.
- Lifetime membership in the community of Trudeau Scholars and Mentors.
Scholars have the opportunity to work part-time while still benefiting from the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Doctoral Admission: Candidates must be admitted to or enrolled in the first or second year of a full-time doctoral program.
- Academic Excellence: Candidates must maintain an outstanding academic record and demonstrate a high level of intellectual ability.
- Non-Canadian Students: Permanent residents and foreign nationals must pursue their doctoral program at a Canadian university.
- Canadian Students: They may pursue their doctoral program at a university in Canada or abroad.
Application Procedure
Interested candidates can submit their application directly through the online portal [here]. Starting this year, universities are no longer required to conduct an internal selection process or nominate their own candidates.
Deadline
The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship 2025 competition begins on September 9, 2024, at 9:00 AM (EST). Applications must be submitted by November 25, 2024, at 4:00 PM (EST). The final results will be announced in May 2025.
