About the Role

African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is currently recruiting a highly motivated Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Intern to support the effective implementation of his MEL activities in Cameroon. This position plays a key role in helping to ensure that project performance, impact measurement, and learning processes align with AWF’s global MEL standards.

The MEL Intern will work closely with the Senior MEL Officer for West and Central Africa to design, implement, and maintain monitoring and evaluation systems, ensuring project results are tracked accurately and effectively. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and committed to delivering high-quality data and insights. Occasional travel within Cameroon is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support MEL Activities: Assist the Senior MEL Officer in coordinating monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning tasks across various projects and landscapes.

  • Data Management & Filing: Maintain an organized and accessible filing system for MEL documents and reports. Ensure that all data and records are properly stored and managed.

  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Help consolidate, clean, and analyze program data to support both internal reporting and donor submissions. Identify and flag data quality issues and support resolution.

  • Reporting Support: Contribute to the drafting and review of MEL reports, including fact sheets, memos, and narrative documents. Liaise with field teams to collect missing information or clarify data points.

  • Learning & Documentation: Assist in identifying and documenting lessons learned and best practices across projects to enhance institutional knowledge.

  • Data Collection Tools: Support the development and rollout of data collection tools such as surveys, interviews, and focus group discussion guides.

  • Project Monitoring: Participate in monitoring activities, including baseline assessments, mid-term reviews, post-distribution monitoring, and final evaluations.

  • Database Support: Help manage and update internal databases and dashboards, ensuring accurate and up-to-date project implementation data.

  • Field Monitoring: Accompany the MEL Officer on field visits to monitor project performance, ensure compliance, and support results-based evaluations.

Additional Responsibilities

You may be required to perform other tasks as assigned by your supervisor to support the overall objectives of the team or organization.

Qualifications and Required Skills

Education

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Statistics, Development Studies, Conservation, or a related field (or equivalent education level).

Experience

  • Prior experience in Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL), especially in a conservation or development program, is a strong advantage.

Technical Knowledge

  • Solid understanding of monitoring and evaluation methodologies, including both qualitative and quantitative research.

  • Proficient in data analysis tools such as Excel, R, Tableau, SPSS, Survey123, or similar platforms.

  • Skilled in using Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel (e.g., Pivot Tables), Outlook, and Teams.

  • Familiarity with GIS tools like ArcGIS is preferred.

  • Comfortable working in team environments, including with remote or virtual teams.

  • Maintains high standards of data accuracy, especially in data collection and reporting.
