About Cameroon and WWF

Cameroon is a country spanning approximately 475,000 square kilometers, often referred to as the “Africa in Miniature” due to its diverse range of ecosystems, encompassing over 90% of Africa’s existing ecological systems. It ranks 5th in Africa for wildlife diversity and 4th for flora diversity. Cameroon is home to 409 mammal species, 183 reptile species, 849 bird species, 190 amphibian species, and over 9,000 plant species. This rich biodiversity is found within nine ecoregions, including the Atlantic Coastal Forest, Central African Mangroves, North Congo Forest-Savanna Mosaic, Northwest Congolian Forests, Eastern Sudanian Savanna, and Sub-Saharan Grassland Savanna. The Cross-Sanaga-Bioko Forests, Mount Cameroon and Bioko Mountain Forests, and Cameroon Highlands Forests are recognized as biodiversity hotspots in West Africa. Furthermore, Cameroon, together with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Congo, houses the largest portion of the Congo Basin, which holds over 15% of the world’s remaining tropical forests. Cameroon is home to significant populations of iconic and endangered species such as elephants, great apes, pangolins, and big cats (lions, leopards), contributing significantly to global priorities for the conservation of the Congo Basin forests and their iconic species. This description aligns with the vision of WWF Cameroon Country Programme Office (WWF CCPO).
