Applications for the Russian Government Scholarships program for international students are now open for the academic year 2022-2023. The program aims to recruit talented foreign students who would like to enroll in master’s and PhD programs in Russia.
The winners will be able to enroll in a program using a single-window system, choosing any of 500 Russian universities. The language of instruction is English or Russian, depending on the chosen program and the university.
All study fields are eligible for the Russian Government Scholarships program. More information and a handful of useful downloads are available through this link. The materials include demos of tasks and program of the second round of the competition, the list of program tracks for subsequent master’s degree and the doctoral track’s materials.
RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS IN NUTSHELL
ELIGIBILITY
The competition is open to :
- Foreign citizens and stateless persons, including compatriots living abroad,
- Having a Bachelor’s degree or completing a Bachelor degree program in the year of the Olympiad for the Master’s track
- Having a Master’s or Specialist’s degree for the PhD track in the year of the Olympiad.

WHAT THE RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS OFFER?
Your tuition fee will be paid by the Russian Federation. You will have to cover your travel and accommodation costs, insurance and personal expenses.
Worth mentioning that, the minimum tuition fee in Russia is $1,750 per year. The maximum is $9,036 per year. The cost of studying a Specialist degree in a medical university in Russia is on average $4,143-4,571 per year.
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS?
Applications for the Russian Government Scholarships are held in the form of an Olympiad that has two tracks: Master and PhD. The official languages of the Olympiad are English and Russian.
You do not have to contact or apply separately for a study program. If you are a winner, you will select a program in the subject you are a winner in. Then, you will choose one or several universities that offer programs in that track.
The Olympiad has two rounds for Master and three rounds for PhD:
- The first round is a competition of portfolios,
- The second round is a problem-solving challenge,
- The third round, for PhD candidates only, involves the selection of a prospective research supervisor for the chosen doctoral program and an interview with him/her.
Participants are requested to register online using the Olympiad registration system from September 15 to December 10, 2021. During this time, Participants should build their portfolio by filling in the necessary data and upload the requested documents in their accounts. All supporting documents must be submitted in either in English or Russian, or their translations must be provided in one of the languages of the Olympiad.
For the first round, only a motivational letter and education level proof are required.
The second round of the Olympiad is organized in a proctored form and is held from January 10 to January 28, 2022.
The third round, for PhD only, is held from February 28 to March 18, 2022, in the form of online interviews with potential research supervisors in accordance with the Olympiad schedule.
