Job Description

  • Position Title: North Cameroon / Chad Binational Complex Landscape Director
  • Reports To: Country Director, Cameroon
  • Program/Sector: Cameroon Program
  • Position Type: Full-time
  • Location: Garoua, Cameroon
  • Internal Liaison: All teams operating in Northern Cameroon and Sena Oura National Park, Chad
  • Coordination With: Departments within the WCS North Cameroon and Chad – Sena Oura Programs, WCS Cameroon and Chad country offices, and the WCS Sudano-Sahel Regional Team
  • Expected Travel: Regular travel to national parks and across the wider landscape

Job Purpose

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is seeking a highly motivated and visionary Landscape Director to lead and strengthen conservation efforts across the North Cameroon–Chad Binational Complex. The successful candidate will provide strategic direction, operational oversight, and team leadership to ensure meaningful conservation outcomes and community benefits.

This role requires an individual with proven leadership, strong management capabilities, and the ability to collaborate effectively with government institutions, traditional authorities, and key partners. The Landscape Director will be responsible for the strategic planning, implementation, coordination, and financial and administrative management of all WCS activities within the landscape.

Key Responsibilities

1. Team Leadership and Management

  • Lead and supervise a multidisciplinary team of approximately 200 staff across Cameroon and Chad, ensuring effective coordination, motivation, and professional development.
  • Foster a strong, inclusive, and gender-balanced team culture grounded in shared conservation values and collaboration.
  • Work closely with the Country Director, HR Manager, Finance and Administration Director, and Programme Manager to maintain an efficient and adaptive organizational structure within the landscape.
  • Serve as a key member of WCS Cameroon’s Senior Management Team, contributing to strategic planning and organizational decision-making.
  • Participate actively in weekly senior management meetings to provide updates on field activities, emerging challenges, and strategic opportunities.

2. Representation and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Maintain strong partnerships with governmental agencies, local institutions, traditional leaders, and community representatives to advance wildlife conservation, promote sustainable resource management, and facilitate conflict resolution.
  • Represent WCS in coordination platforms and high-level dialogues, ensuring consistent communication and collaboration with all stakeholders.
  • In partnership with the Country Director, Finance and Administration Director, and Programme Manager, ensure transparent communication with donors regarding landscape progress, challenges, and achievements.

3. Strategic Planning and Programme Development

  • Collaborate with the Country Director, Programme Manager, and Deputy Landscape Director to refine and strengthen the strategic approach across the North Cameroon–Chad Landscape.
  • Identify and pursue new funding opportunities, contributing to the design and development of project proposals.
  • Work in coordination with WCS leadership in Cameroon, Chad, and the broader Sudano-Sahel Regional team to enhance WCS’s strategic impact, align conservation priorities, and promote innovative, sustainable initiatives.

4. Programme Oversight and Operations

  • Oversee the implementation and coordination of all projects within the North Cameroon–Chad Binational Complex portfolio.
  • Support the Deputy Landscape Director and relevant teams in developing detailed work plans, budgets, reports, procurement plans, and other essential project documentation.
  • In collaboration with the Logistics Director, ensure efficient planning and timely execution of field operations, compliance with procurement standards, and adherence to both internal and donor financial procedures.
  • Partner with the Finance and Administration Director, Programme Manager, Landscape Finance Manager, and technical leads to ensure timely and high-quality financial and technical reporting that meets donor expectations.
  • Provide overall supervision of the anti-poaching, community conservation, biomonitoring, aviation, logistics, and communications units, ensuring effective coordination, planning, and reporting across departments.

5. Security and Safeguards

  • Uphold and enforce the highest safety and security standards for all WCS personnel, partners, and collaborators, in full compliance with the WCS Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure strict adherence to human rights principles and ethical conduct in all conservation activities, promoting a culture of respect, accountability, and integrity across the organization.

Qualification Requirements

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of proven experience in programme or project management within the conservation or natural resource management sector.
  • Strong understanding of conservation challenges and opportunities in the Sudano-Sahel region.
  • A Master’s degree or higher in conservation, natural resource management, environmental science, or another discipline relevant to conservation in Africa.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex, multidisciplinary conservation initiatives, ideally with significant field-based experience (experience in the Sudano-Sahel region is a strong asset).
  • Proven track record of working within multicultural and interdisciplinary teams, managing multiple activities simultaneously, and achieving defined objectives across diverse projects and strategies.
  • Experience overseeing large, donor-funded international project portfolios, including coordination with multiple implementing partners.
  • Comprehensive experience in technical, logistical, and financial management, including planning, budgeting, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Strong commitment to gender equity and the creation of an inclusive and respectful workplace.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in both English and French, with the ability to engage effectively across diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management abilities, with a collaborative and adaptive management style.
  • Willingness and ability to live and work in remote, multicultural environments under challenging field conditions.
