About UNICEF
UNICEF operates in some of the most challenging environments across the globe, working relentlessly to support the most vulnerable children. Our mission is to save lives, protect children’s rights, and help them reach their full potential. Through partnerships in 190 countries and territories, we are committed to ensuring that every child, everywhere, is given the opportunity to thrive and contribute to building a better world.
We never give up, because every child deserves strength.
UNICEF’s Presence in Cameroon
UNICEF has been actively engaged in Cameroon since 1975, supporting the rights of women and children as outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Our focus areas in Cameroon include:
- Health
- HIV/AIDS
- Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)
- Nutrition
- Education
- Child Protection
- Social Inclusion
UNICEF works closely with children, particularly those from vulnerable and marginalized families, ensuring they have access to essential resources and support.
Challenges and Opportunities in Cameroon
According to UN data, Cameroon’s population in 2020 was estimated at 26.5 million, with a significant proportion of youth. This demographic generates a strong demand for socioeconomic services. In rural areas, families face limited access to basic social services and the adverse effects of climate change, which exacerbate poverty and lead to severe child deprivations.
The challenges are substantial, but together, we can overcome them. This collective effort requires the involvement of:
- Government agencies
- Technical and financial partners
- Civil society
- Private sector
- Donors
- Parliamentarians
- Communities
All stakeholders, including women, men, youth, and children, are crucial in driving sustainable development and tackling the pressing issues in Cameroon. By acting together, we can contribute to the progress of Cameroon, a nation that reflects both the challenges and the potential of Africa.
