About UNICEF:

UNICEF operates in some of the most challenging environments globally, striving to reach the most vulnerable children. Our mission is to save lives, protect children’s rights, and support them in realizing their full potential. Working across 190 countries and territories, we advocate for every child, every day, to create a brighter future for all. We never give up.

A Better Future for Every Child:

Cameroon is among the top ten countries most vulnerable to climate risks, as identified by UNICEF’s Children’s Climate Risk Index. The country faces a wide range of environmental challenges due to its diverse climates and ecosystems, from desertification in the Sahelian regions to coastal erosion and rising sea levels in coastal areas, and deforestation in the Congo Basin. The frequency and intensity of climate-related disasters—such as droughts, floods, landslides, bushfires, and windstorms—have increased, causing devastating socio-economic impacts, especially on children and local communities.

Why Green Skills Matter:

In line with UNICEF’s global initiatives, like Green Skills programs (Innovation 30, YOMA) and Green Rising, we recognize that adolescents can be agents of change, not just recipients of aid. Promoting green skills education is vital to equipping children, adolescents, and youth with the tools they need to engage in and contribute to the green economy. This education helps mitigate the impact of climate change and fosters sustainable development.

The Cameroon Green Skills Study:

A comprehensive study is needed to explore the green skills landscape in Cameroon, identifying potential employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for adolescents. The findings will provide technical insights to key ministries, including the Ministries of Youth, Environment, Secondary Education, and Employment & Vocational Training. The ultimate goal is to empower Cameroonian adolescents and youth to take an active role in the country’s ecological transition and sustainable economic development. Additionally, this initiative aims to open up viable livelihood opportunities within the emerging green economy.

How Can You Make a Difference?

This study seeks to identify and evaluate green skills that are essential for combating climate change and promoting adaptation efforts among adolescents in Cameroon. These skills are vital for preparing youth to take an active role in the emerging green economy. The research aims to highlight the current gaps in green skills education while also proposing strategies to integrate these skills into formal and informal learning environments. Moreover, it explores effective methods to engage adolescents and offers practical pathways to create income opportunities through green skills training.

Key Objectives of the Study:

  1. Assess the current opportunities and gaps in the development of green skills among adolescents in Cameroon.
  2. Identify green skills crucial for Cameroon’s green economy, focusing on the skills required in key industries and sectors.
  3. Propose strategies for integrating green skills development into formal education, informal learning, and vocational training programs.
  4. Develop a structured learning pathway that connects green skills with entrepreneurship and income-generating opportunities, with a broader impact on children, schools, health centers, and communities.

This study will offer a comprehensive framework to ensure that young people are equipped with the green skills necessary to thrive in a sustainable economy.
