Casual Driver Opportunity
Location and Scope of Work
Casual Drivers will be based in Buea, Kumba, or Mamfe, with frequent travel to IRC’s program areas.
Objective
The primary role of Casual Drivers is to provide on-call transportation support whenever IRC’s regular drivers are unavailable due to:
- Annual or paternity leave
- Illness
- Increased workload
- Emergency response needs
Casual Drivers will be added to an IRC database and contacted as needed to ensure the continuity of operations.
Professional Driver Responsibilities and Duties
Primary Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Chief Driver, the Driver will be responsible for ensuring safe and professional transportation services for IRC employees. The specific duties include:
- Transport Services:
- Drive IRC staff courteously and efficiently to pre-approved destinations.
- Ensure strict adherence to travel plans and schedules authorized by the supervisor.
- Notify the supervisor promptly in case of delays or deviations that may affect the planned schedule.
- Transport departing passengers to the airport and collect arriving passengers, adhering to specified times and locations.
- Communication and Accessibility:
- Maintain regular and effective communication with the supervisor.
- Keep the mobile phone switched on during working hours to ensure constant availability.
- Compliance with Vehicle Usage Policies:
- Adhere to IRC vehicle use regulations, including:
- Properly filling out the logbook after every trip.
- Ensuring the use of seat belts.
- Prohibiting alcohol, drugs, or unauthorized individuals/materials in the vehicle without prior approval.
- Adhere to IRC vehicle use regulations, including:
- Vehicle Maintenance and Safety:
- Perform routine vehicle maintenance and promptly report any breakdowns or potential issues to the supervisor.
- Regularly check fuel and lubricant levels to avoid disruptions; complete and sign the fuel sheet after each refill.
- Ensure all essential tools, equipment, and spare parts are present in the vehicle.
- Keep all administrative documents, such as registration and insurance, up to date. Notify the supervisor at least three weeks in advance of any expirations.
- Drive and park vehicles safely, avoiding routes deemed unsafe for security reasons.
- Maintain vehicle cleanliness by washing both the interior and exterior regularly.
- Emergency Preparedness:
- Ensure that the first aid kit in the vehicle is present and fully stocked.
- Support to Mechanics:
- Assist mechanics during vehicle repairs or routine maintenance.
- Additional Duties:
- Perform any other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Follow-Up and Reporting
- Prepare daily travel reports, including written field feedback.
- Ensure all financial documents, such as advance liquidations and security envelopes, are accurately completed and submitted in line with IRC policies.

Other Responsibilities
The candidate will be available to perform additional tasks as assigned by their direct supervisor or by the IRC (International Rescue Committee). All activities must be carried out in compliance with IRC’s operational policies. The role may involve other responsibilities as delegated by the supervisor, ensuring flexibility and readiness to contribute to the organization’s mission.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Valid driving license (B, D categories).
- Holder of at least a First School Leaving Certificate.
- Basic mechanical knowledge.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience in a similar role.
- Prior experience with an international humanitarian NGO is preferred.
- Strong local knowledge of the area (Buea, Kumba, or Mamfe).
- The candidate must be mature and comfortable working in a multicultural environment, with an ability to foster teamwork and handle pressure effectively.
- Adaptability and flexibility in varying work conditions.
- Proficiency in English and/or French, as well as local languages.
