Purpose of the Role

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is seeking a qualified and reliable Driver to support its operations in Cameroon. Based in Bamenda and under the direct supervision of the Emergency Response Project Manager, the Driver will be responsible for the safe transportation of staff, partners, and goods. The role includes maintaining the assigned vehicle in optimal condition and ensuring compliance with DRC and national safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

A. Vehicle Operation

  • Safely operate DRC vehicles to transport authorized personnel and cargo to designated locations.
  • Adjust driving according to road and weather conditions to ensure safety.
  • Ensure all necessary vehicle documentation is present and valid (e.g., registration, insurance, vehicle license).
  • Accurately complete the vehicle logbook for each trip, ensuring passengers sign as required.
  • Ensure non-DRC passengers sign a waiver of liability before boarding the vehicle.

B. Vehicle Maintenance

  • Perform daily vehicle inspections (e.g., oil levels, brake fluid, tire pressure, coolant).
  • Complete daily vehicle checklists and report any issues promptly.
  • Inform the supervisor of any vehicle damage, required maintenance, or repairs.
  • Carry out minor repairs and maintain cleanliness inside and outside the vehicle.
  • Ensure the vehicle is equipped with necessary tools and a stocked first aid kit.
  • Conduct a monthly physical inventory of vehicle tools, safety equipment, and first aid supplies.

C. Loading and Transport

  • Load and unload items carefully, ensuring all cargo is securely fastened during transit.
  • Comply with the maximum authorized load and passenger limits for the vehicle.

D. Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure the safety of all passengers and transported goods.
  • Report road incidents or security concerns immediately to the Safety Manager.
  • Maintain a fuel level of at least half a tank and refuel as required.
  • Ensure all passengers wear seat belts at all times.
  • Confirm that the vehicle displays all required signage (e.g., DRC logo, “No Weapons”).
  • Verify that the vehicle is equipped with safety gear, including warning triangles and reflective vests.
  • Adhere strictly to DRC’s security procedures, especially during road checks or interactions with armed actors.
  • Uphold the DRC Code of Conduct at all times and act as a positive representative of the organization.
  • Comply with national and organizational driving regulations and safety protocols.

Note: This list of responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be modified to reflect operational needs, provided changes remain aligned with the core purpose of the role.

4. Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid Category B Driver’s License
  • A minimum of 8 years of proven experience as a professional driver (work certificates or official attestations required)
  • At least 2 years of experience driving for an International NGO (INGO); supporting documents must be provided
  • Demonstrated experience operating Left-Hand Drive 4×4 vehicles, especially Toyota Land Cruiser Hardtop models
  • Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to carry out minor vehicle repairs and routine maintenance
  • Capable of working under pressure with a calm, respectful, and cooperative attitude at all times
  • Good knowledge of the local geographical areas and willingness to operate in challenging security environments
  • Prior security and safety training is considered an asset
  • High standards of punctuality, responsibility, and adherence to procedures
  • Must be able to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain confidentiality at all times

5. General Conditions of Employment

  • The employee is expected to strictly adhere to DRC’s security protocols, confidentiality standards, and ethical policies, including the Code of Conduct and the Humanitarian Accountability Framework
  • Any additional paid employment during the contract period must be authorized in advance by DRC
  • The employee must avoid any activity that may negatively impact DRC’s reputation or hinder the implementation of its projects
  • Public communications, including media interviews or sharing photos or materials related to DRC activities, require prior written approval
  • All equipment and tools provided by DRC for work purposes must be returned at the end of the contract period or upon request
