IFC is seeking to hire two Senior Investment Officers for its Africa Infrastructure department. The designated team is tasked with identifying, executing, and overseeing investment transactions within the energy, transport, telecoms, and municipal & environmental infrastructure sectors in Central Africa. IFC’s Investment Officers play a pivotal role in the initiation, negotiation, structuring, and subsequent oversight of IFC’s investment projects. This role is anticipated to encompass all infrastructure sectors and is located in Accra, Ghana / Douala, Cameroon / Lagos, Nigeria. The chosen candidate will report to the Regional Industry Manager for Infrastructure in Central Africa.

Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Assume a senior client leadership role in driving business development across diverse infrastructure sectors.
  • Cultivate a robust pipeline of high-quality investment opportunities, with a primary focus on Central Africa, by anticipating market trends and leveraging sector/country expertise.
  • Collaborate closely with IFC country representatives, World Bank, and MIGA colleagues, participating in the formulation of client, country, and sector strategies.
  • Evaluate and analyze business opportunities, consolidating information into internal reports for informed decision-making.
  • Assess, structure, negotiate, and finalize new debt and equity transactions, portfolio restructurings, capital increases, equity sales, etc.
  • Innovate and devise appropriate financial structures for intricate transactions.
  • Lead negotiation and documentation teams, employing strong negotiation skills to develop solutions and overcome challenges in both straightforward and complex transactions.
  • Coordinate effectively with social, environmental, legal, and technical assistance colleagues to structure transactions, adding value to clients’ businesses, finding pragmatic solutions to project and sector challenges, and ensuring sustainable development impact.
  • Supervise a proportionate number of existing investments in the Africa region.
  • Cultivate and sustain robust relationships with clients, global and regional private businesses, banking and multilateral partners, and government officials to further advance infrastructure sectors and identify specific investment opportunities.
  • Direct and manage project teams, providing guidance and mentorship to junior staff.
  • Collaborate with the World Bank and MIGA in crafting sector and/or regional strategies, and contribute to related promotional efforts, including targeting potential investments and providing policy advisory support.

Selection Criteria:

  • Possession of a Master’s degree in finance or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of 12 years of experience with a development finance institution, commercial bank, international financial institution, or private equity firm, focusing on private sector infrastructure financing and development.
  • Demonstrated success in sourcing, structuring, and closing private sector investment projects within infrastructure sectors, preferably with experience in the Africa region.
  • Robust technical and operational skills showcased through a track record of structuring and closing investments in infrastructure sectors, coupled with portfolio supervision of intricate projects.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of various infrastructure core sectors such as power, transportation, utilities, telecoms, municipal, and natural resources; experience in project and/or corporate finance.
  • Additional advantageous experience in equity and/or the telecom sector.
  • Previous work experience in Africa, along with a solid understanding of sector issues in the region, is beneficial.
  • Capability to engage directly and independently with senior management of clients, financial and technical partners, as well as senior government officials.
  • Proven track record of portfolio supervision for complex projects.
  • Availability and willingness to travel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, and proficiency in French, with Portuguese and Spanish as additional assets.
